What steps should I take to find a good career?

Growing up, did you ever think about what your “dream” job would be? Something that you’re passionate about and would absolutely love spending your time doing? This is known as a “calling.”

Your calling is about more than just what you want to be when you grow up. It’s an urge toward a particular way of life. Unfortunately, we all have to work to make money to live, but your calling can help you decide how you can do that. So, your calling can be a job, or career, or whatever kind of journey or calling you want.

One of the most interesting things about humans is our adaptability. The fact that people can be born into the most difficult circumstances imaginable but still have a dream is what makes humans special. Motivation—the belief that you can do something—is what determines whether or not you can beat the odds. Depending on your circumstances, you are either likely to believe you can do something, or less likely to believe you can.

Getting an education is the first step toward finding a good career and improving your economic mobility. That doesn’t necessarily mean college. A trade school or performing arts program may be a better option to help you advance toward your calling. There are also a few other things to consider as you work toward your future career:1

  • Dream boldly—Not only should you chase your dream; it’s encouraged! Don’t let anyone put limits on your aspirations. Your dream is what will fuel your motivation. Choose a career that ignites your passions.
  • Embrace education and hard work—You’re going to face challenges along the way. That’s a given. Education is the foundation for your future career. Everything you’ll eventually accomplish starts there.
  • Find a mentor—Seek out someone already working in your field of interest who can offer guidance and support. Your high school counselor or college advisor may be able to connect you to the right individual. A mentor is a person who will cheer you on and provide advice on career mistakes to avoid.
  • Develop listening skills—Listen more than you talk. This is definitely a learned skill! Being a good listener is a skill employers look for when hiring someone.
  • Strengthen your soft skills—These are skills like communication and teamwork. Basically, working with people. Learning these skills will help you feel more comfortable at work and in life.
  • Build social networks—Making connections in the career field you’re interested in will help build your social capital and make you more economically mobile.
  • Be persistent—You’ll be told “no” more than once. Being persistent is key to getting through tough times. Understand that you may not reach your career goals right away. But, stay determined and trust yourself as you embark on your journey.
